Regarding ORMs and query plans: NHibernate has a setting (prepare_sql = true) that will generate queries based off of column length instead of the length of the parameter value. There was a period in time where this feature did not work, which has caused some long lasting misinformation in DBA circles.

That being said, I do believe that Linq2Sql has the query plan bloat described in this episode. I am not certain one way or the other in regards to Entity Framework.
