AI Curators and Sentient Canvases: The Future of Art Apps in the Digital Age

We are in the artificial intelligence era, where even art is not pure anymore. In fact, AI has changed how we create art, distribute it, and consume it. So, are an artist and a curator no more different? With generative AI, the boundaries are becoming blurry as AI curators become “curator-as-artists.” For art businesses, this means a completely different ballgame, as now they have to adapt to changing landscapes in the media and entertainment industry.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at AI curators and sentient canvases. We’ll learn how AI-driven art impacts the end user and what you need to do to make your art app survive and deliver impact to your users and how it transforms software development for the art. This article is based on the interview with Andrew Vakulich, delivery manager at Chudovo.

AI Curators With AI-Generated Art

Without AI, art creation was not easy. It required a dedicated skill set, lots of time, and imagination.

For example, you can create images via Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs).

GANs are a subset of machine learning that help generate realistic images, videos, and other data types. These include the likes of

  • Imaginaire, a PyTorch-based GAN
  • Pygan, a Python-based library
  • Mimicry, a lightweight PyTorch library

GANs are almost a decade old and have come a long way from their inception in 2014 by Ian Goodfellow.

However, there are now easier-to-use AI-powered tools that let you create artistic images. Even though ChatGPT is not a GAN and is a large language model, it is capable of creating images that look very creative, humane, and thought-provoking.

GAN’s advantage is its approach, as it is trained from new samples indistinguishable from real data.

AI curators can now use cheap tools that can create AI-generated art in minutes. They can create 100s of iterations in a matter of minutes.

Personally, we have used the likes of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and ImageFX. There are other capable tools in the market, including Adobe Firefly, Dall-E 3, and others. For videos, we have tried tools like Runway, DeepBrain AI, and Hour One.

These tools don’t require any coding. All the user needs to do is input text to generate an image output.

What are Sentient Canvases? Are They the Future?

Sentient Canvases is a way of art that changes based on a human’s mood or needs. It can respond to the changes, such as the time of day, to showcase a deeper connection with humans. Under the hood, AI works autonomously to power the dynamic relationship between machines and humans.

A clever piece from Johs Clark depicts how a sentient interface can adapt to the style, mood, and behavior. According to him, it creates an adventurous scene, such as “moving through the blue sky” or “finding peace in the ocean.” These scenes connect with the user deeply and bridge the gap between the creator and the audience.

As we humans grow with tech, it is only a matter of time before sentient canvases will have more impact on our day-to-day life than ever. However, it is not going to replace other art forms or ways to connect with humans.

However, the biggest challenge is for curators to adopt AI and bring their best creation to sustain where AI has taken over.

Companies that deal with art media must acknowledge that the future is different and should incorporate the new ways to connect with the user in the digital age.

What Sentient Canvases Bring to the Table?

Sentient canvases bring multiple benefits, including

  • Intelligence assistance and co-creation
  • Dynamic environment and adaptive art
  • Ability to restore and preserve art

It’s clear that GenAI can help improve art creation with ease, be it video, image, or other art forms.

A dynamic environment is the biggest benefit. It creates adaptive art depending on what’s surrounding the person. It can help the user handle situations better, as the music/video or other art form played depends on what’s going on around them.

Lastly, sentient canvases can also use the material’s aging to showcase degradation. This can help preserve the art form.

Media and entertainment software development must incorporate sentient canvases capabilities and create modern art apps that connect with the audience.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations

AI curators, including software developers for the art, have many challenges. They should also consider ethical considerations.

Some of the challenges and ethical considerations include:

  • Ensure originality in work with full ownership. The challenge here is to ensure proper copyright, especially when a machine is generating art from past data or information. To resolve, governing bodies must come up with a new legal framework.
  • Even though AI creations are spectacular, they are limited due to bias and data dependence. They can be biased to showcase an art form as aggressive or silent, depending on the bias.
  • Humans are at the core of experiences in these art forms. That’s why it is vital to keep human artists at the core of the creation with AI acting as a tool rather than a replacement.

Future Predictions

AI is developing at a rapid rate. It is not hard to say that by 2030, most of our content creation will be done by AI. However, it shouldn’t be taken as an alternative to human artists.

Human artists, on the other hand, must adopt and learn how to use the tool to push the boundaries of art. With the precision of a machine and the imagination of creators, we can create groundbreaking art for humankind.

Right now, we are at a stage where AI art is mostly despised. However, with time, the perception of art and creativity changes. It is up to the art community to embrace the change.

Sentient canvases, for example, open up new ways to interact with the art form. It bridges the connection between machines and humans. The modern take will only push the art boundaries and bring the best innovation among the creators.

Conclusion: Should Your Art App Include AI?

Developing art and entertainment software is challenging. It’s critical to evaluate and accept the changing landscape. Without AI inclusion, your next app might feel incomplete.

Apart from that, you must consider the AI challenges and ethical issues related to using AI art. The mobile landscape has already changed significantly as art apps include AI art now. For example, pick any of the modern wallpaper apps, and almost all of them include an AI wallpaper generation option.
